The ruins of the fortress of Gesztes hides in a dense forest of Vértes mountain on a flat mountaintop, only a few kilometers away from the village of Várgesztes. It was built in the XIII century, later it was used as a hunting castle then acted as a defense part. The medieval fortress stands out from the environment with its regular form of cuboid. Its towers were connected by walls of the same height. Only some parts have remained from the walls by now, although the former structure of the building as of the lower window on the second floor can be still recognized. However the fortress can not be visited inside, you can see it outside and it can be reached by a pleasant trip.
The lake in the boundary of Várgesztes is a really peaceful recreation place. Not only for fishermen but it is a fine destination for families and for hikers as well. The lake is surrounded by a botanical path which invites an enjoyable walk or biking. You can find an outdoor training park and a playground offering an active relaxation to all ages.
One of the most romantic fortresses of Vértes which stands on a wild ridge embraced by nature. The exact time of the fortress's history is unknown but it is supposed that the Csák family may have built it after the Mongol invasion. A wonderful panoramic sight opens to us from the ruins towards Vértessomló and Környe. The Countrywide Blue Tour adjoins the area as well so it is a famous stop for hikers.
A stone hexagon lookout tower with three floors can be found on Great-Somló mountain above Vértessomló, which was renovated in 2015. We can see a magnificent panorama to Vértes and Gerecse from the tower, what is more, we can see the Little Carphatians in clear weather conditions. A relaxing place and a fireplace have been built next to the tower, so it can be suitable for a picnic as well.
The Hermitage of Majkapuszta-Kamalduli is one of the most interesting and most special monastery complexes in Europe. The complex of buildings consists of 17 hermitages and churches and was built in the XVIII century by count József Esterházy’s order. Hermits lived separated from the world in total silence in the little cell houses which were built around a spacious courtyard. The church and the former abbot cottage stand in the heart of the monastery. The fully renovated and reopened (in 2022) hermitage is a tour destination radiating peace and a special atmosphere that works as a visitor center today.
The Museum of Mining in Oroszlány works in an industrial environment preserved realistically in the boundary of the former mining city, which presents the miners' former world up close. Visitors can walk around the original headframe and they can even go under the ground to a realistic tunnel. Machines, tools, instruments and safety equipment which were used in mining can be seen at the exhibition. It offers a substantial experience for all of a family by the support of a little railway, an escape room and by different interactive elements.
The fortress of Tata is a real medieval pearl being a jewel of the town, standing on the shore of the picturesque Old Lake. Originally it was built in Gothic style in the XIV century during the reign of Zsigmond Luxemburgi, then it was formed into a renaissance palace during the reign of King Mátyás. Kings and noblemen lived in the fortress while it was a place for significant political and cultural events in the XV-XVI centuries. It served military purposes during the period of Ottoman Hungary then it went through several building procedures. Today, it is the home for Kuny Domonkos Museum which presents the building procedures of the fortress along with its archeology findings and the rich past of the neighbourhood. It gives a memorable experience to everyone by its tower view, a walk around the lake and by the atmosphere of the fortress courtyard.
The impressive Turul sculpture standing on the edge of Stone-mountain is one of the best-known monuments not only for Tatabánya, but for Hungary as well. The giant bird, which is made of bronze, holds Árpád’s sword in its claw with a wingspan of nearly 15 m, having a Hungarian conventional crown on its head. It was set by the millennium of Bánhida battle in 1907, since then it has been guarding the limestone cliff above the town. The view from here is unique and in clear weather conditions you can even see Pannonhalma. The neighbourhood is an organized tour destination where some botanical paths lead to the Cave of Szelim and to the Gate of Gerecse too.
On the western part of Stone-mountain in Tatabánya the giant hollow Cave of Szelim gawps in a magnificent cliff. It is a unique natural formation with its hall of 45 m length and a height of 18 m, whose characteristic is a hole in its ceiling. It is significant both from geological and archeological perspectives since based on the findings the Neanderthal man also lived in it. A short but spectacular walk leads here from the Turul-monument where a glance to the town and to further panoramic sights is worth taking at.
It is memorable to walk even for visitors not being skilled in geology on the Marsh-red slopes in the boundaries of Gánt. The botanical path of 3,5 km with 13 stages tells about the history of bauxite mining in interactive ways along with stories about the geological past of the neighbourhood while it presents the works of former miners. We can see a contemporary steam locomotive, an electric locomotive used in the mine and some miner trucks too.
